Paris St-Germain, the European champions, staged a late comeback against Europa League winners Tottenham to claim the UEFA Super Cup, denying Thomas Frank’s Spurs side the trophy. The London side led 2-0 after 84 minutes and were seconds away from securing a historic win. But PSG’s substitute and Portuguese international Goncalo Ramos headed in a 94th-minute equaliser to send the game to a penalty shootout.
Initially, it was Spurs who took the lead thanks to PSG’s Vitinha sending his shot wide. But Tottenham’s goal scorer, Micky van de Ven, would see his shot saved by the Parisian’s goalkeeper, Lucas Chevalier who replaced Gianluigi Donnarumma as the Italian seeks a Premier League move. Mathys Tel saw his shot going wide before Nuno Mendes secures his penalty to give PSG the UEFA Super Cup.
Thomas Frank replaced Ange Postecoglou who was sacked just over two weeks after Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Manchester United in the final of the Europa League. While Spurs ended their trophy drought, their finish in the league, just one place above relegation, was seen by some as more reflective of the club’s 24/25 season.
Van de Ven gave the North London side the lead, taking the rebound after Chevalier denied Joao Palhinha’s shot. Chevalier was beaten again in the second half, as Cristian Romero’s header doubled the deficit. But PSG fired back within minutes as Ramos sent the game to spot kicks.
This comes weeks after losing to Chelsea in the Club World Cup final in the USA last month, the only team to deny the Parisians a trophy this season. While it may be heartbreaking for Tottenham, fans may hope that it could signal a better season, especially as they will also compete in the Champion’s League.
