Southern Europe sees thousands evacuated amid wildfires

Thousands of people across southern Europe have had to leave their homes amid wildfires burning the region during a “record-breaking” heatwave. Firefighters in near Madrid worked into the night to contain a fire that broke out near the Spanish capital while a man in Tres Cantos, not too far away, died in hospital from 98% burns.
Wildfires were reported throughout a number of Spanish regions. These include Castile, Leon, Castile-La Mancha, Andalusia, and Galicia. The country’s interior ministry declared a “pre-emergency” which puts national services on standby to support firefighters. Nearly 1,000 members of the armed forces are already working to help as parts of the country expects temperatures to reach 44C.
But Spain is not the only country in Southern Europe experiencing this problem. More than 700 firefighters in Trancoso, around 217 miles northeast of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, were deployed to control a blaze. Northern parts of the country saw smaller fires reported.
“We are being cooked alive, this cannot continue,” Vila Real mayor, Alexandre Favaios, said. The city had a fire burning for 10 days in the Portuguese city.
Firefighters are also working against wildfires in Turkey in the northwestern province of Canakkale. Hundreds of residents had to flee their homes and the fires caused a temporary closure to the airport there as well as to shipping on the Dardanelles Strait
